Enginered Wood Fibers

Engineered Wood Fiber is a commercial playground safety surfacing option designed to provide an economical, natural-looking surface beneath and around playground equipment. Unlike ordinary landscape mulch or standard wood chips, Engineered Wood Fiber is specifically manufactured for playground applications, with ASTM F2075 establishing requirements related to characteristics such as particle size, consistency, purity, drainage, and hazardous metal concentrations.

EWF provides an impact-attenuating layer within playground use zones, helping create a safer surface when children fall from playground equipment. ASTM F2075 requires qualifying engineered wood fiber to meet ASTM F1292 requirements when used within the playground equipment use zone. The appropriate installation depth depends on the specific product's tested critical fall height and should always be determined using the manufacturer's installation and testing information.

One of the biggest advantages of Engineered Wood Fiber is its ability to provide commercial playground surfacing at a lower initial investment than many unitary surfacing systems. It can cover large playground areas efficiently and offers a warm, natural appearance that complements traditional, nature-inspired, and modern playground designs.

Engineered Wood Fiber can also support accessible playground design when the specific surfacing system is tested, installed, and maintained appropriately. ASTM F2075 addresses compliance with ASTM F1951 for accessibility where applicable, making proper installation and ongoing maintenance especially important for maintaining accessible routes through loose-fill surfacing.

Installation & Maintenance

Proper installation and ongoing maintenance are essential to the performance of Engineered Wood Fiber. Because EWF is a loose-fill material, regular playground inspections should include checking surfacing depth, redistributing displaced material, removing foreign objects, and replenishing the fiber as needed.

Special attention should be given to high-use areas such as underneath swings, at slide exits, around climbers, and near transfer points where loose-fill material can become displaced more quickly. Maintaining the manufacturer's required depth helps preserve the surfacing system's intended impact-attenuation performance and accessibility characteristics.

Playground Safety Surfacing

Engineered Wood Fiber should not be confused with ordinary landscaping mulch or generic wood chips. Playground EWF is a specifically manufactured surfacing product subject to ASTM F2075 requirements. The standard addresses characteristics including particle size, consistency, purity, drainage, hazardous metal concentrations, and impact performance requirements.

When selecting EWF for a commercial playground, always verify the specific product's certifications, tested critical fall height, recommended installation depth, installation instructions, and maintenance requirements before determining whether it is appropriate for a particular playground.

Ideal Applications

  • Childcare and daycare facilities
  • Preschools
  • Early childhood education centers
  • Elementary schools
  • Public parks and municipal playgrounds
  • Churches and faith-based organizations

Engineered Wood Fiber provides a practical combination of playground safety performance, natural aesthetics, and affordability. Whether it is being installed beneath a brand-new playground, replacing aging surfacing, or replenishing an existing EWF system, it offers organizations a flexible commercial playground surfacing solution that can be maintained and refreshed over time.

Footer Options (Varies by Product)

In-Ground Mounting

This is the most common installation method for playground and shade structures. It involves digging holes and setting the posts directly into concrete that is poured during installation.

Surface Mount (Anchor Bolt)

With this method, posts are secured to an existing solid surface—typically concrete—using specialized base plates and anchor bolt hardware provided with the product.

Ground Spike

This is the simplest mounting option, using a sledgehammer to drive stakes through a footer plate to secure the posts in the desired location. Ground spikes are not recommended for sandy or loamy soil conditions and are only available for select product sets.

FAQs

What are the payment requirements for an order?

Full payment is typically required upfront due to the custom nature of many products. Exceptions can be made for governmental entities through approved purchase orders. All payments must be received prior to the start of installation.

Are installation services available?

Installation services are available for commercial playground projects. A qualified and insured professional can be arranged to handle the setup, and quotes are provided upon request. The goal is to ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient installation process from start to finish.

Is expedited shipping an option for my order?

Expedited shipping is not currently available. Due to the size and nature of playground LTL shipments, most freight carriers are unable to guarantee faster delivery. Unless otherwise noted, all products ship according to the estimated lead times listed on each product page.

How is the estimated lead time calculated?

Estimated lead time refers to the amount of time it typically takes for a product to be prepared and shipped after an order is placed. For many commercial playground items, manufacturing begins only once the order is received. For example, if the lead time is listed as 8 to 10 weeks, that means it will take approximately8 to 10 weeks for the product to be manufactured, packaged, and shipped from the warehouse.
